Travelling is complicated enough. Staying connected shouldn’t be.
Traverrsim started with one simple idea: make staying connected abroad one less thing travellers have to worry about.
That idea took us from selling just 20 travel SIMs to more than 200,000 eSIMs. Here’s how we got there.
The message from a Paris bathroom
Before eSIM, we sold physical travel SIM cards. We saw travellers struggle with the same problems again and again — SIM trays that wouldn’t open, confusing setup instructions, unreliable networks, and the dreaded “No Service” after landing.
Then came one customer message we still remember. A customer travelling in Paris told us his SIM barely had any signal — except inside the bathroom of a tourist attraction. He messaged us:
“I paid RM80 for this SIM and it only works in this bathroom.”
That line stuck with us. It was funny in hindsight, but the problem wasn’t. Our customer had paid to stay connected while travelling, and we hadn’t delivered the experience he expected. So instead of accepting these problems as “just how travel SIMs work,” we started fixing them. One by one.
From 20 to 200,000
We didn’t get here by simply selling more SIM cards. Every step came from trying to remove another frustration travellers faced.
Travellers wanted someone they could trust. Buying a travel SIM online meant trusting that it would actually work after landing thousands of kilometres away. So we worked towards becoming a Shopee Mall verified seller, giving customers a more trusted place to purchase their travel connectivity before flying.
Travellers wanted faster connections. As 5G networks expanded around the world, travellers shouldn’t have been stuck using older travel connectivity. So we introduced Malaysia’s first 5G travel eSIM, bringing 5G access to travellers in supported destinations.
Travellers didn’t want to swap SIM cards anymore. Tiny SIM trays, lost Malaysian SIM cards and changing SIMs at the airport were problems that didn’t need to exist. So we moved away from physical travel SIMs and went fully digital with eSIM. Travellers could install before flying and connect after arriving.
Travellers wanted to know how much data they actually needed. Choosing between 5GB, 10GB, 20GB or unlimited shouldn’t require guessing. So we built our eSIM app with AI-assisted plan recommendations designed to help travellers choose a plan based on their trip instead of simply pushing the biggest package.
Travellers wanted installation to be easier. QR codes were better than swapping physical SIM cards. But we thought even that could be simpler. So we introduced easier installation options that reduce the steps between buying an eSIM and getting it onto your phone.
Travellers wanted to know what was happening after purchase. “How much data do I have left?” “Has my eSIM activated?” “How many days are left?” These shouldn’t require contacting customer support. So we built usage tracking and plan information directly into the experience.
And travellers kept choosing us. The first 20 units became 100. Then 1,000. Then 10,000. And eventually, more than 200,000 eSIMs. Not because we found a clever way to sell more. But because every time travellers showed us something that made staying connected abroad frustrating, we tried to make it simpler.
Today, Traverrsim continues to serve travellers across destinations around the world — but we're still working on the same problem we started with: How can we make staying connected abroad easier?
