Switzerland eSIM speed test: what we measured at 12 tourist spots

Short answer

Switzerland is one of the fastest countries we have tested. Across 12 tourist locations we measured 5G in every town and valley village — including Grindelwald, Interlaken, Lucerne and Zermatt — with 120–320 Mbps download, and 4G at high-altitude viewpoints such as Grindelwald First, Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat at 20–70 Mbps. The only places data disappeared were long rail tunnels.

How we tested: Speedtest by Ookla on an iPhone using a traverrsim Europe eSIM roaming on Swiss networks, three runs per location, median reported, outdoors, August 2026. Your own numbers will vary with crowds, weather and handset — run the same test on arrival and compare.

Grindelwald and the Jungfrau region in detail

Grindelwald village chalets in green meadows below the Eiger north face in the Swiss Alps
Grindelwald sits below the Eiger and is the busiest base for Jungfraujoch trips.

Grindelwald is where most travellers ask us about coverage, because the day usually involves booking tickets, checking weather cams and sharing photos from altitude. In the village and at Grindelwald Terminal we held 5G the whole time. On the Eiger Express gondola the connection stayed up until the last stretch before Eigergletscher. At Grindelwald First the network falls back to 4G but remained good enough to stream. On the cog railway to Jungfraujoch, expect a dead zone in the tunnel inside the Eiger — download your tickets and maps before boarding.

How to run the same test yourself

  1. 1

Install your travel eSIM before you fly

Add the profile at home over Wi-Fi. It stays dormant until it finds a Swiss network.

  2. 2

Set it as your data line and turn home roaming off

iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > travel eSIM, and Data Roaming off on your home line.

  3. 3

Test outdoors, three runs, take the median

One run can be skewed by a passing train or a full cable car. Three runs gives a fair figure.

  4. 4

    Record the network type

Note whether the status bar shows 5G or 4G — that explains most of the difference between locations.

Frequently asked questions

Is there mobile signal in Grindelwald?
YesGrindelwald village, the railway station and Grindelwald Terminal all carry 5G, and we measured 150–240 Mbps download there. Grindelwald First at 2,168 m drops to 4G but stayed usable at 35–70 Mbps. Verify it yourself on arrival: open a speed test app on the station platform before you board the Eiger Express.
Does a travel eSIM work at Jungfraujoch?
YesA travel eSIM roams onto the same Swiss networks as a local SIM, so it works at 3,454 m on the Sphinx terrace — we recorded 20–45 Mbps on 4G. The signal cuts out inside the long rail tunnels between Eigergletscher and the top station, which affects local SIMs equally.
Is 5G available everywhere in Switzerland?
No5G is widespread in cities, valley towns and larger resort villages, but most high-altitude viewpoints and mountain passes we tested were 4G only. That is still fast enough for maps, messaging, ride-hailing and uploading photos.
Is Switzerland included in Europe eSIM plans?
It dependson the plan. Switzerland is in Schengen but not the EU, so a handful of 'EU' data plans exclude it. Always open the plan's country list before you pay and look for Switzerland by name — every traverrsim plan lists its exact countries on the product page.
