How to check your phone in settings
iPhone
Settings → General → About → scroll to Available SIM. If it shows a Digital SIM entry (or IMEI2), your iPhone supports eSIM. Or dial *#06# and look for an EID number.
Samsung Galaxy
Settings → Connections → SIM Manager. If you see an option to Add eSIM, your phone supports it. Or dial *#06# — a 32-digit EID means eSIM is supported.
Google Pixel
Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Download a SIM instead? If the option is there, your Pixel supports eSIM.
Any Android
Dial *#06# on the keypad. If the popup shows an EID (a long 32-digit number below the IMEI), your phone has eSIM hardware.
Is your phone carrier-unlocked?
A travel eSIM only works on phones that aren't locked to a home carrier. To check: on iPhone go to Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. On Android, try inserting a physical SIM from any other network — if it works, you're unlocked. If it doesn't, contact your original carrier and ask for a network unlock. Most carriers unlock for free after the initial contract period.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
- The fastest test on any phone: open the dialer and type *#06#. If you see an EID number (a 32-digit code, usually below the IMEI), your phone has eSIM hardware. You can also check Settings — on iPhone under General → About, on Android under SIM Manager or Network & Internet.
- Is my phone unlocked enough to use a travel eSIM?
- Your phone must be carrier-unlocked to install any foreign eSIM, including traverrsim. Phones bought outright or after a contract ends are usually unlocked. Contract-locked phones from AT&T, Verizon, EE, Vodafone etc. need to be unlocked by that carrier first — most will do it for free after a few months.
- Why don't Samsung phones from Hong Kong or China support eSIM?
- Samsung disables eSIM at the firmware level for phones sold in Hong Kong and mainland China due to local regulatory requirements. Same physical phone, but the eSIM feature is locked out and cannot be enabled. Check the model code on the box — /HK or /CH suffix means no eSIM.
- Can I use eSIM on my iPad or Apple Watch when travelling?
- Yes — any cellular iPad from the 7th generation onward and any Apple Watch Series 3 (cellular) or later supports eSIM. Install the traverrsim QR code the same way as on iPhone. Note: Apple Watch shares your iPhone's carrier plan by default; for a standalone travel plan on Watch, use the Watch app on iPhone to add a separate eSIM.
- My phone has an EID but the option to add eSIM is greyed out. Why?
- This usually means the phone is carrier-locked. Contact your original carrier and request an unlock — it's free in most countries after the initial contract period. Once unlocked, the Add eSIM option becomes active immediately, no factory reset required.
- If my phone doesn't support eSIM, what are my options?
- A physical prepaid SIM at the arrival airport is the standard fallback. Alternatively, buy a portable Wi-Fi hotspot (rental kiosks are common at Asian airports) or use free Wi-Fi where available. If you travel often, the next phone you buy will almost certainly support eSIM — every flagship since 2020 does.
